Today we are learning about someone who is very important because he was one of the first people to tell everyone in Ireland about Jesus.  A long time ago there was a boy called Patrick who was living with his Mummy and Daddy in England. One day some pirates came and stole Patrick away and took him in their boat to ireland where they made him work hard in the fields looking after sheep.  Patrick was sad and lonely. He missed his Mum and Dad and he wanted to go home. He remembered that his Mummy had always told him to pray when he needed help and God would answer his prayers and help him. So he started to pray every day.  One night Patrick had a dream about a boat and when he woke up he knew he had to get to the sea and find a boat to go back home. So that is what he did. He ran away from the people who had stolen him and he walked a long long way until he reached the sea and found a big boat which was going from country to country,

The boat wasnt going back to England. It went to France.  When he was in France Patrick decided he wanted to pray lots more and thank God every day for rescuing him so he went to live in a church and become a priest.  A long time later when Patrick was all grown up and old, God told him to go back to Ireland, to the place where he had been a prisoner, to tell the people about Jesus. I wonder if he was a bit scared to go back there.  Maybe he didnt really want to go but because God had asked him to he went anyway. He sometimes picked a shamrock leaf when he was talking to explain that God is three people, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.  (show leaf)  Lots of people listened to Patrick and decided to follow Jesus.  Some people think that Patrick prayed to God and asked Him to get rid of all the snakes in Ireland and God did it !  Thats why we dont have any snakes living here ( well not the dangerous ones anyway)   When Patrick died people were very sad. They decided to build a big church in Downpatrick so that people would remember him - you can go and see it today. It is where Patrick is buried.  People still think about him on the day that he died , which was March 17th - today!.  Lots of people wear green clothes because green was Patricks favourite colour.  They sometimes wear shamrocks on their clothes and have parties because they are happy that Patrick told everyone about Jesus.
