bread 22 Jan

 1) Talk time.  Who are our friends.  What is good about them.  Lets say thank you to Jesus for our friends.  Pray

2) Lesson.   Can you remember what we were talking about last week?  Thats right, we were talking about fruit.  We ate some grapes to remind us that Jesus is a vine and we are the branches.  He wants us to grow fruit, but not grapes.  Can we remember any of the things He wants us to grow.   Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness , faithfulness and self control.

Well today we are talking about food again!!  I think Jesus liked food very much because He talked about it alot.  What is your favourite food?   Well when Jesus was here there was one thing which was everyones favourite and it was........ BREAD!   ( Have a few different types of bread to show - maybe a bread stick, a sliced loaf and some breadsticks?)  In Jesus's time there were no shops selling this sort of bread - everyone had to make their own and they made it every day and it was absolutely YUMMY!   Have you ever eaten fresh bread out of the oven?   In lots of countries in the world people still bake their own bread every day.  They eat alot of it because it is cheap and easy to make and it fills you up so you dont feel hungry.

Do you remember last term when we were talking about the miracles Jesus did?   He turned two fish and five pieces of bread into lots and lots and lots of fish and bread to feed people who were hungry.   Well, the day after that happened Jesus was with his friends the disciples and He said something very funny to them.  He said ' Hey guys, guess what.  I am a loaf of bread!'   That was a funny things to say wasnt it?  Do you think He really was a loaf of bread?   No, I think He was a person ,but He was telling a bit of a joke to make people listen.

When Jesus took five pieces of bread and turned them into lots and lots of bread it meant that everyone could have some.  When Jesus said that He was bread He meant that God could share Him with lots and lots of people - with everyone in fact.

Demonstration - take a slice of bread and cut or tear it up into enough pieces to give everyone .

Here is a piece of bread.  If you eat this it will stop you being hungry for a little while, but pretty soon you will be hungry again.  Where in your body do you feel hungry?  Yep, in your tummy.  When we feel hungry what do we need to do to make that feeling go away?   Eat!!!  But Jesus says there is another sort of hungry we can feel and it is in our hearts.   Do you ever feel sad?  Or a bit scared, or lonely or worried?   That is a bit like being hungry too.  We need to do something about it but eating wont help because those feelings arent in our tummies they are in our heart.   Jesus says that if we have Him in our hearts then He can make our sadness and looneliness and fear and worries go away.   Jesus is food for our hearts.   Have you ever seen in church sometimes everybody takes a piece of bread and some juice and they stop for a minute to pray to Jesus?  They do that to remember what Jesus said about being bread.

Would anyone like to ask Jesus to come into their heart?

Lets sing and thank Jesus for being so wonderful.

Jesus love is very wonderful.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=12&v=iMIdHtPeBCI&feature=emb_logo

I have decided to follow Jesus

Activity  either bring in a couple of part-baked bread sticks and put them in the oven at the start of the session so they are baked by this point.  Or, feeling adventurous , try making some bread dough with the kids  for them to take home and bake at home.

make this with cardboard and white paper - simple!

Playtime - playdough?  They can make bread and buns out of playdough  (recipe for homemade dough here)

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup salt
  • 2 Tablespoons cream of tartar
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 1/4 cups boiling water
  • Food colouring (optional)

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt and cream of tartar.
  • Add the vegetable oil and boiling water, and using a spatula, mix until combined. Once it’s cool enough to handle, use your hands to knead the playdough in the bowl until it becomes smooth, about 2 minutes. (It may appear wet at first but will dry as you knead and the water gets fully absorbed.)
  • Turn the playdough onto your work surface and knead it until it is smooth, about 2 minutes.
  • Use the homemade playdough as is, or if desired, colour with food colouring of your choice. (If using food colouring, it’s best to mix the playdough in a bowl while wearing disposable gloves to avoid colouring your hands.
  • Homemade playdough will last for up to 2 months if stored in an airtight container at room temperature.
