Pentecost

Last week we learned about Jesus's friend Thomas. He wasnt there when Jesus came back to life and appeared to all the disciples so he didnt really believe that Jesus was alive.  He had to see Jesus and touch Him so that He could believe.  Do you remember we wore sunglasses to show us that sometimes we cant see things but they are still there. Just like we cant see Jesus but He is there.

Today we are going to learn about what happened next.

Jesus told His friends that He was going to go to heaven to be with God the Father.  How do you think the disciples felt? I think they were a bit sad. Jesus had died and been buried and they were very sad about that, then He was alive again and they were really excited and happy, but now Jesus said He was going to go away again and this time He wasnt coming back.  Oh dear.  Have you ever said goodbye to someone you werent going to see for a long time?  Its sad isnt it?

But...! There was good news. Jesus said, Im going to heaven to be with my Father, but Im going to send you someone who is just like me and He is going to be with you forever and ever.  How do you think the disciples felt about that?  yep super happy.  Jesus told them to wait for His friend to come.  Are you good at waiting? Im not.  I dont like waiting for people to come. What do you think the disciples did when they were waiting?  Maybe they played a game.  Maybe they told each other stories. Maybe they had snacks.  I know they did alot of praying.  Anyway, whatever they were doing they were waiting and waiting and then..... suddenly..... guess what happened?

A big wind started blowing inside the house!! Can you make a noise like a big whooshing wind? (hand out windmills and get kids to blow them.  Take them back in after a few minutes of blowing)

And then something even more incredible ... there was fire in the room. But it didnt burn anyone and it didnt set fire to anything in the room. The flames were in the air and they were over the heads of all the disciples.  Why do you think there was a big wind and there was fire?  Because thats what Jesus's friend the Holy Spirit looks like!  I think the disciples were waiting for a person to come but instead Jesus sent his Spirit.

Then something else happened. The disciples started to speak in other languages.  Hands up if you speak English.  Hands up if you speak another language like Spanish or French or Irish (if you can say something in another language do so)  Normally if we want to talk to someone from another country we have to learn their language and it takes a long time.  But the Holy Spirit gave people new languages all at once so that they could go and tell everyone in the world about Jesus.

The day when all this happened is called Pentecost.

Lets colour in our pictures and put fire over the heads of the disciples
