Light March 5th

Talk time  Does anyone know what our senses are?  We have five of them.  They are things our bodies can do which are really amazing.  Our senses are sight, smell, touch, hearing and taste.  Show me what you use to see.  What do we use to hear with?  What do we use to smell with?  What do you use to feel things with ( they will say hands but point out that we can feel with all areas of our bodies)   What do we use to taste things with?  Isnt it wonderful that God has made us with ears and eyes and noses and mouths so that we can experience things in the world around us.  Lets pray and thank Him for our bodies and pray for anyone who isnt feeling well.   Pray.

Lesson time   Over the last few weeks we have been learning about Jesus and who He says He is.  Today we are going to hear another thing He said.  Jesus said that He is light.  Can you point to the light in this room?  Is the light on or off?  What about outside - is it light or dark outside?  Where does the outside light come from?  Yes, thats right it comes from the sun.  Even if its a cloudy day we still have light because the sunshine is stronger than the clouds and it comes through and shines so that we can see things.  At night time the sun isnt shining and it is dark.   When it is dark we need to turn on a light to see.  Plants need light to grow.  The light from the sun keeps us warm .  If we didnt have a sun everything would be frozen like ice.   Light is really really important.

Jesus says He is light.   He is even better than the sun because He makes us grow and stops everything being dark.   Hands up if you have ever felt scared - maybe of being in the dark?  Maybe you had a bad dream.  Maybe you got lost for a minute and didnt know where Mummy or Daddy were.  It isnt nice to feel scared.  It is a bit like this ( Scribble with black crayon on a piece of white paper).    Hands up if you have ever felt sad.  Maybe you hurt yourself and you cried because it was sore.  Maybe someone in your family was really poorly.  Maybe someone died.  Maybe someone you know felt really sad and that made you sad too.   When we feel sad its like this ( scribble more black crayon on the page)  Hands up if you have ever felt cross and grumpy.  Yes I think we all feel like that sometimes.  It makes our page even more black and scribbly ( scribble some more).    Oh dear.  Look at our page.  It is all black ( look sad) .

Sometimes those feelings cover us up completely.  Like this.  ( take a piece of blackout material and cover the children with it completely - like being under a parachute.  Be aware of any kids who might genuinely not like it.  Have an adult go underneath with them.)    Its really dark in here.  This is what it is like when we are sad or scared or grumpy and cross.  But Jesus says He is the light.  So lets shout for Jesus to help and see what happens.  After three lets shout '  Jesus, help me!'   1,2,3..  Jesus help me!

( another adult outside the blackout 'tent' shines as powerful a torch as possible under the material.

Look.  A small light makes all the darkness go away.  Now we can see each other.   This is what Jesus does when we ask Him to help us.  He makes the sadness and the scaryness and the grumpiness go away.  Any time you feel as though your heart is full of scribbles you can ask Jesus to help and He will come with His light and chase all the scribbles away.   Isnt that great?

Lets sing to Jesus and thank Him for being a light.
