Truth 19th Feb
( This is going to be hard as pre-school kids cant really grasp abstract concepts too much yet)
Talk time - lets talk about our families. Hands up if you have a brother. Hands up if you have a sister. Hands up if you have grandparents. Hands up if you have cousins. Its nice to be part of a family isnt it? Families come in all shapes and sizes. Some families are really big ( any volunteers or helpers have a big family?) Some are small. But we all need people to look after us and have fun with us and help us - even when we are grown ups! Lets pray and thank Jesus for our families.
Lesson - Ive got a pack of cards with animals on them which are designed to be a pair matching game for tiny kids. They can play matching the pairs at the end. Show a picture and then say - This is a...... and say the wrong thing. Make it a game so the kids can have fun correcting you. Look confused that you got it wrong.
You are so clever at knowing your animals. You know something? I did really know what these things were - I was just playing a game with you. I was pretending. Sometimes it is fun to pretend isnt it? Who can pretend to be a dog? Can you pretend to be a dancer? etc etc (Have some fun with this before getting them to settle)
It can be fun to pretend, but we know that pretend things arent real. If I pretend to be a dog, Im not really a dog am I? Sometimes it is hard to tell if something is pretend or real. ( get two cereal boxes. Have some of the real cereal in one box - cheerios are good - and in the other put something else, maybe raisins? ) What is in these boxes? ( start with the fake box) Nope its not Cheerios , its raisins . ( show to kids but dont let them have any yet) What do you think is in this box ( real Cheerios. Hopefully there will now be some doubt about whats really in the box. No shaking allowed) Ah, this one really IS Cheerios. ( Let the kids eat the raisins and the cheerios. )
Jesus said the He is the Truth. Blow up the TRUTH word balloons and peg or stick them up somewhere ( on the edge of the table or on the door? Bigger kids can probably help with the blowing) What does this word mean? TRUTH. Jesus says this is who He is. It means that Jesus never pretends. When Jesus tells us something we can believe it. If Jesus gives us Cheerios, its Cheerios in the box not something else. Do you remember the past few weeks we have been hearing what Jesus said about Himself? He said He was a shepherd. He wasnt pretending to be a shepherd - He really is one. Its just that He looks after people not sheep. He said He was a vine for growing fruit. He wasnt pretending. He really is a vine but He isnt grown grapes He is growing people. He said He was a door, and He wasnt pretending. He really is a door, but its not sheep He is keeping safe, its people.
Jesus never tells us something wrong. He keeps His promises and He is good. We can trust Him.
Lets sing and tell Jesus how glad we are that we can always believe what He says. ( This song covers all we have spoken about in past few weeks. We shall sing it for the next few weeks. Simple and effective.) Play it twice. First time have a go at learning actions, second time with instruments.
