Palm Sunday
Talk time : Palm Sunday so we will have had a donkey outside. This might bring up a whole conversation in itself!!! If not then.......What did everyone do yesterday? Chat about the weekend and then pray giving thanks for whatever comes up or praying about anything the children want to pray for.
Lesson ; Show the kids an easter egg. ( make sure that if you have any wee ones who cant have chocolate that you have something else as a treat as well - or maybe have a lactose free egg in case of intolerances) Let them talk about what it is and ask them if they know what Easter is. Tell them they can have some chocolate if they sit very quietly and listen really well (!)
You know that over the last few weeks we have been learning about Jesus and who He is? He is a shepherd and a door and the way and the truth. today we are going to learn about the most important thing that Jesus is. He is our Saviour. Does anyone know what that word Saviour means? Well it means that Jesus saves us.
If there is a fire in your house who do you call? The fire brigade ( have a fire engine as a prop)
If you fall over and hurt yourself really badly or get really sick who do you call ? The doctor or the ambulance
If you go swimming at the swimming pool and you cant swim and start to sink to the bottom who will jump in and help you? The lifeguard.
When we are in trouble or in danger we call for help - the firemen or police or doctors or lifeguards come to rescue us. And that's what Jesus came to do. He came to save and help and rescue us. But why do we need to be rescued? Are you on fire right now? Are you really sick? Are you sinking in the sea? No. But you still need to be rescued.
The Bible tells us that we need to be rescued from something called sin.
Sin is another word for doing what we want and not what God wants.
Take a piece of white paper and explain that God is like this paper . He is clean and white and perfect. I am like this pencil. Im grey because I am a sinner. Im sometimes grumpy and sometimes mean and lazy and greedy and unkind. So if I come near to God Im going to make Him not white and clean any more ( put a light scribble on the piece of paper). God is perfect. He cant have scribbles on Him. But He wants to love us and be close to us. What can He do?? Well, He sent Jesus to rub out our sins ( take a rubber and rub out the pencil marks on the paper)
Jesus doesnt just rub out the bad things we do, He says if we ask Him He will change us inside so we no longer do bad things ( swap the pencil for a white crayon or colouring pencil) And that means we can now come near to God - right up close to Him and get to know Him. ( use the white pencil on the paper to show it doesnt make a mark)
At Easter we have a big party in church to say thank you to Jesus for being our rescuer. Next Sunday is Easter Sunday and we shall be learning more about Jesus our Saviour. But for now, you listened really well so you can have some easter egg :D
And now we shall sing to Jesus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUfwoUPTg68&t=30s
